The course was designed by J.H. Taylor in 1927 and retains its original character through innate contours and sweeping undulations. The course at Ogbourne is a fine example of a downland course sitting on fast draining chalk meaning the course is almost never closed due to rain. The main greens are in play all year round apart from the severely sloped 2nd.
The course is not particularly long by today's standards at 6,422 yards but what it lacks in length, it makes up for in difficulty. Built on the sloping downland, at Ogbourne you rarely find a flat lie; on most approach shots, the base of the pin is obscured from view and you are often firing a mid to long iron into a tight target. The course plays like a links and when the wind gets up so too does the scoring.
